THE GEOMETRY OF INTERSECTIONS

The geometry of these intersecting roads; now they are somewhat old-fashioned and seem to concentrate traffic rather than distribute it - is such that you must be careful not to misjudge them at first glance. For often they appear, watched over by traffic signs and road markings, to be nothing more than they are - but then the object of such geometry is lacking and the governance of movement becomes secondary to the aesthetic comprehension of a gloved hand as it passes limply along a pavement, part waving, part shooing you away.
