Dear Mr Warren,
Greetings!
I thought I would write you a letter simply for the sake of writing a letter. I mean, in producing all this correspondence, this chain of exchanges from the beginning to the end of a project, I know full well that I am only trying to get to the last letter, the final one, after which I can say now I am stopping – now I am finished. Like an alcoholic who longs for the last drink, all the others being drunk merely to qualify this ‘to be’ the last; all the others in between are just standing between him and his end.
Do not be mistaken; this does not leave me futile. I have too much respect for the alcoholics and the letter-writers for that.
