The nest entrances are commonly found in fine, sandy hills, with underground colonies containing many tunnels and chambers.

Workers show a size-based division of labour, with smaller members remaining in the nest as nursemaids and larger workers serving as nest guards and foragers.

An adult male, instead of copulating via the female’s sex organs, will stab her abdomen to release sperm directly into her bloodstream.

In certain regions they construct elaborate traps for the other species they feed upon.

Some indigenous people use the stings as part of their initiation rites to manhood.
